Persistent back and knee pain?
Start with a diet!

Hello. I am Dr. Ji-yeon Hong, director of Yon Korean Medicine Clinic.

Many of you suffer from back or knee pain, don't you? Many patients visit our clinic to treat these symptoms. In fact, I occasionally feel such pain myself.

However, let me tell you! Some people have become so accustomed to back or knee pain that they just live with it, while others find their pain improves with treatment only to recur, or even return shortly after a full recovery.

Back and knee pain
Hidden Cause

An overlooked hidden cause of joint pain: 'Weight'

Lumbar lordosis and muscle changes

While pain can have various causes, one significant factor that cannot be overlooked is weight. When weight increases, especially with significant abdominal fat, it easily leads to 'lumbar lordosis' (a condition where the lumbar spine curves forward).

If lumbar lordosis is left unaddressed, muscles change as a compensatory action. The abdominal and posterior thigh muscles relax, while the back and pelvic muscles tighten; this can lead to deformation and pain in the knee joints as well. Even ignoring skeletal changes and looking at it from a common-sense perspective, it is easy to understand.

As weight increases, the load on each joint (especially the back, knees, and ankles) rises. Furthermore, if you are over 40, a period when joints are naturally prone to weakening, this added burden can significantly exacerbate pain.

Medical Fact

Losing 10% of your body weight
reduces pain by nearly 50%

2013 study published in JAMA (Results from 18-month observation of 454 overweight/obese patients with osteoarthritis)

Combined exercise and diet control
led to an average weight loss of 10.6kg

Result 02

Reduced weight bearing
lowered knee pressure by 9%

Result 03

Joint pain decreased by 45% and
inflammatory cytokines by 16%

Result 04

Overall physical function improved
(functional impairment scores dropped by 42%)

Weight loss metrics
Case Study

55-year-old female office worker
diet treatment case

[At time of visit] 163cm / 77kg
Back pain (lumbar lordosis), right knee pain, overweight

Considering her BMI, she had a fair amount of skeletal muscle, so the pain wasn't extremely severe, but she began a diet due to the physical heaviness caused by weight gain. As she could not engage in intensive exercise, she proceeded slowly over 5 months and lost weight down to 71kg.

Diet case graph
Result 01

Back pain relief

While the lumbar lordosis posture hasn't been completely corrected, the intensity and frequency of back pain have decreased significantly.

Result 02

Knee pain resolved

The burden on her joints was reduced so significantly that she barely feels the pain that was in her right knee.

Result 03

Body fat & BMI improvement

Although she is still in the overweight range, both body fat percentage and BMI values have shown positive improvement.

Director's Advice

Concurrent 'Lean Diet'

If you already have joint pain, it is recommended to lose weight with 'Lean Diet' supplements and then gradually increase exercise as the pain eases.

Diet Tip

'Bone Broth':
Joint health and weight loss

This is a diet method recommended by Lean Detox for those who have weak joints but a tendency toward obesity.
Bone broth diet is widely known internationally as a weight-loss regimen used by Hollywood celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow and Halle Berry.

We recommend replacing one meal, such as breakfast or dinner, with bone broth while dieting.
