Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)
can get better!

Hello. This is Dr. Hong Ji-yeon of Yon Oriental Medicine Clinic.

I'd like to share the story of a patient who visited the clinic recently.
At first, a patient in her early 20s with a slim build visited due to amenorrhea, and was diagnosed with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) after testing.

For reference, Polycystic Ovary Syndrome is often called PCOS. Let's take a brief look at what this condition is.

PCOS Information
What is PCOS?

What is Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)?

Common symptoms of PCOS include irregular menstruation, hirsutism, and acne, and its exact cause has not yet been clearly identified.

Diagnostic criteria are: 1) Oligo-ovulation or anovulation, 2) Hyperandrogenism, and 3) The presence of 10 or more immature follicles in a "pearl necklace" appearance on ultrasound. PCOS is diagnosed when at least two of these three criteria are met.

Although not a formal diagnostic criterion, 50-70% of patients with this condition tend to be obese. Therefore, I advise that patients with a slim build who have PCOS are in a smaller demographic and may require a longer treatment period, making consistent, long-term care essential from the start.

Case Review

A slim patient in her 20s,
how did she improve?

The key is to set aside impatience
and pursue consistent treatment.

Customized Herbal Medicine
POINT 01

Treatment Planning

I advised the patient to set a treatment period of at least 6 months and to consistently undergo acupuncture alongside herbal treatment.

POINT 02

Combined Herbal & Acupuncture Treatment

During the treatment period, 8 courses of customized herbal medicine were prescribed, and intensive treatment was performed once a week for 5-6 months.

POINT 03

Normalization of Menstrual Cycle

As her overall condition improved, the duration of amenorrhea shortened and various symptoms she suffered from disappeared. Currently, her cycle has normalized to once a month.

POINT 04

Recovery & Prevention of Recurrence

She received confirmation from her OB/GYN that the PCOS had completely resolved, and she currently visits once every 10 days for management to prevent recurrence.

Don't Give Up

Do not give up on treatment

Patients with a larger build and higher body fat tend to show easier improvement when treatment is combined with weight loss. However, these days, there is a growing trend of slim patients like the case mentioned above.

Even in these cases, if you do not feel impatient and engage in consistent treatment, almost everyone will show positive reactions and improve. The most regrettable cases are those who stop treatment just as they are starting to get better. I have often felt disappointed in the clinic thinking, "It would have been so great if they had just stayed a little longer..."

There may be many reasons for stopping treatment, but is there any priority higher than your health? When you are healthy, you can do anything. I hope you will take good care of your body and maintain a healthy life through proper treatment.

"You must listen to what your body is telling you and cherish it.
Do not ignore small warning signs as trivial matters, and address your health
before treatment becomes more difficult."
