Korean Medicine by Life Stage,
Menopause Care A to Z

Hello, I am Dr. Ji-yeon Hong of Yon Clinic.

Following my previous discussion on postpartum care as part of our life-stage treatment series, today I would like to talk about 'menopause' care. As many of you know, menopause refers to the various physical and emotional symptoms that appear around the time a woman reaches the end of her menstrual cycles.

Personally, instead of the term "menopause," I prefer to call it "the completion period." It is a time to rest after fulfilling the physiological duty of conceiving and giving birth to new life; I believe menopause is the beginning of this resting phase.

Why Menopause?

Menopause, an Inevitable Change Everyone Faces

While the intensity and timing may vary, it seems no one escapes this phase entirely. Being around 50 years old and having no particular menopausal symptoms is not necessarily something to just be happy about. Many patients come to us in their 60s or 70s complaining of classic menopausal symptoms, asking, "I passed through menopause without even knowing it, what is happening to me?"

Since it is a change everyone must go through at least once, navigating it wisely is the shortcut to improving your quality of life and maintaining health after the completion period.

Mental Stress

The reason why it is especially difficult to navigate menopause well is that a child's puberty often overlaps with the mother's menopause. As the saying goes, "no parent can win against their child," so even while struggling themselves, mothers often endure and suppress their feelings to accommodate their children. Then, once the children leave home for college, the mother experiences "Empty Nest Syndrome," as if she has lost everything.

Depression and Emptiness

The sense of emptiness and loss is even greater for those who have dedicated themselves entirely to child-rearing and education. A brief period of slump is understandable, but if it persists, it can lead to diagnoses of depression, bipolar disorder, panic disorder, insomnia, or anxiety, so special care is required.

Overcome

4 Rules for Overcoming
Menopausal Syndrome

It requires consistent personal effort
along with the support and cooperation of family.

Regular Walking Exercise
POINT 01

Regular Exercise

Light exercise that makes you break a sweat for about an hour a day is recommended. Even just walking while enjoying warm sunlight is a great help.

POINT 02

Meditation and Relaxation

Try to take time to relax your tense mind and body, whether it's through five minutes of quiet meditation or deep abdominal breathing each day.

POINT 03

Express Your Needs Clearly

Don't just endure everything for the sake of your family. If something is disagreeable, express it clearly by saying "I don't like this." Expressing your own needs is an act of courage.

POINT 04

Healthy Diet Management

Avoid stimulating foods and switch to a healthy diet that can help with hormonal imbalance and physical circulation.
